"Growing sunflowers for Perdue AgriBusiness was a big win for our organic farm. Sunflowers are a nice extension to our organic rotation, without the need to buy any new equipment. Our yields were on the high side of the range for both full season and double crop plantings. The Perdue people were great to work with, and the incredible display of sunflowers was a true blessing from God and nature. Our fields were the talk of the town, and were the backdrop for hundreds of photos, including ours."

On our farm we are always striving to improve the diversity of our crop rotation as well as grow more food grade crops. Growing sunflowers for Perdue Agribusiness helps us achieve these important goals. Additional benefits of growing sunflowers are the community attention they get and the platform they provide for talking directly with people about organic and regenerative farming practices. Sunflowers have been a great addition to our farm operation and we look forward to more years of growing and working with Perdue.

“Sunflowers are such a different creature than any other crop I had been around. The plant has such a unique way of growing and has many benefits that fit particularly well in an organic production system. The roots, the leaves, the biomass, and the impact the plant has on its ecosystem (such as helping pollinators) all make it a great fit for my farm. And when five hundred people show up in an afternoon to take pictures with something you grew? It is impossible not to smile!”

"2020 was a good experience raising sunflowers for Perdue. A cold, wet Spring caused us to have to replant the entire field, but Mike Garland was helpful in quickly getting us seeds for the replanting. Once in bloom, the sunflowers were enjoyed by honeybees and neighbors. We used a row crop header to gather the sunflower heads which worked well without too much damage to the seeds. The field yielded above expectations, even with a drought in the summer months. The only fertilizer that was used was one ton of chicken litter an acre. Everyone we talked to at Perdue was helpful and easy to work with. We look forward to raising sunflowers for Perdue in 2021."

“Our first year of raising organic sunflowers has been a great experience! In the early stages, we really did not know anything about raising sunflowers. Perdue Agribusiness provided the resources and knowledge to get us going with sunflowers and help us make the first year successful. Sunflowers are an excellent rotation crop for our organic farm and fit well after many crops.  With our cooler, wetter springs, sunflowers give us a shorter season crop that we can plant as a single crop, or as a double crop behind a winter small grain. Being hardy, they still thrive when we get late summer heat and dryness.  We look forward to producing more sunflowers with Perdue Agribusiness.”
